A Year of Commitment and a Journey Driven by Generosity

Introduction

The European School continues its commitment to international solidarity through the Guatemala Solidarity Project: United for Children and Women. This initiative, supported by the entire school community, aims to provide assistance to two Guatemalan organisations, Educando Guatemala and Caras Alegres, which work with vulnerable children and women. More than just a trip, this project is a transformative experience where solidarity, commitment, and cultural exchange take on their full meaning.

A Model of Collective Engagement: A Whole-School Project

Throughout the 2023-24 academic year, teachers, students, and families have come together to bring this initiative to life. Through various fundraising activities, the school successfully raised €5,373.60, a sum that reflects the generosity and enthusiasm of our community. Some of the most impactful actions included the sale of Guatemalan handicrafts, bake sales with homemade treats prepared by students, and direct donations from families.

This academic year, 2024-25, significant additional support has come from the APEEE, which has donated €500 towards the purchase of educational and cultural materials. These funds will not only contribute to the trip but will also help enrich school activities throughout the year.

Project Goals: Beyond the Trip

This initiative is far more than a simple school trip. It is based on three key pillars:

  • Awareness: Helping students understand the social and economic realities of Guatemala while reinforcing European values of solidarity and cooperation.
  • Cultural Exchange: Establishing meaningful connections between European and Guatemalan students through educational and artistic activities.
  • Concrete Action: Providing direct support to partner organisations through financial donations, educational materials, and on-site initiatives.
The Journey: A Hands-On Commitment

Twenty students, accompanied by two teachers and a parent, will soon be travelling to Guatemala. Their mission is to actively participate in the projects run by Educando Guatemala and Caras Alegres. Planned activities include:

  • Teaching and academic support: Providing lessons in French, English, Mathematics, and ICT.
  • Recreational and sports activities: Organising games and workshops for children.
  • Artistic initiatives: Creating two educational murals.

Students have been selected based on their level of commitment, motivation, and involvement in the project. The selection process included interviews, teacher recommendations, and an assessment of their academic consistency.

A Tangible Impact on the Ground

The funds already raised have enabled concrete support. Thanks to these contributions, Educando Guatemala has been able to provide scholarships for several students, covering their school fees and essential educational materials. Meanwhile, Caras Alegres has been able to sustain its Caras Alegres Tarde programme, which offers children a safe space after school, with educational activities and a daily meal.

The message from those running these organisations is clear: every euro raised makes a tangible difference in the lives of children and families. Our project is not just an act of charity; it represents genuine cooperation, where young people become active agents of change.

What’s Next? A Long-Term Commitment

This first journey is just the beginning. Depending on its impact and the motivation of our community, the school hopes to make this initiative a long-term commitment. This will depend on everyone’s engagement, but the initial results and the enthusiasm of the participants already show that this project has great potential for continuity.

Together, let us make solidarity more than just an idea – let us turn it into a real and lasting commitment. Thank you to everyone who is helping, in whatever way, to make this project a success!
