Description
Computer science is probably the fastest growing discipline in recent decades. Computers (of all kinds and sizes) and the Internet now play a very important role in most areas of our daily lives. Likewise, it is unimaginable that education does not require the significant presence of IT tools and resources.
The secondary cycle of the European Schools must both provide formal training in a number of subjects and encourage the personal development of pupils in a broader social and cultural context.
On the one hand, formal training involves understanding concepts and processes. It aims at acquiring knowledge and skills so that students are able to apply what they have learned in each subject and in a transversal way.
On the other hand, students learn to describe, analyze, interpret, think critically and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in creative and original ways in a wide variety of social, scientific and cultural contexts.
The use of the computer raises questions of law, ethics and democracy, including copyright, freedom of expression and information and the right of individuals to privacy. In the future, computer users will need both a creative approach to computer technology and an awareness of the legal and democratic aspects of this technology.
In a European School, we aim to integrate the personal and academic aspects of education by making our students aware of both their own local identity and the richness of European cultures. The result is a myriad of behaviors and attitudes that demonstrate a clear respect for the traditions of others, as well as pride in one’s own identity.

 

Principles
As the world of IT evolves so rapidly, the two main objectives of this new program are, on the one hand, to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills and, on the other hand, to give them the opportunity to become independent and autonomous learners. In this sense, students should acquire a variety of skills that will allow them to continue learning on their own.

 

Objectives
1st and 2nd years
At the end of the 2nd, the student must be able to:
• To know and become familiar with computers and the school’s IT environment
• Use the operating system and applications as tools
• Work with files, folders and different storages
• Use the most common types of software such as word processing, spreadsheets and presentation tools.
• To use the Internet as a source of knowledge and communication
• To learn about the ethics, risks and opportunities of modern technologies

3rd year
At the end of year 3, the student must be able to:
• Learn more about IT
• To manipulate simple computer objects
• To have learned the basics of web site design and programming.

In S3 the IT is an optional course. The objective of this course is to add some capabilities for students who want to know more about IT. Students will learn how to handle simple objects in computers. They will learn the basics of web design and programming.

4th and 5th year
During these two years, students will deepen the topics taught in years 1-3 and will use more advanced application features. They will increasingly understand the links between these applications and how they can learn for themselves how to use ITs.
There are also new topics such as databases and computer-generated images. At this point, it is very important to inform students about data security and copyright so that they can make the right decisions when using modern day technologies.

6th and 7th years
Most students who choose IT in this cycle want to study computer science at university. This course aims to understand the principles underlying modern technologies and to be able to plan, implement and control a project.
During these two years, students will deepen the topics taught in 4th and 5th, and they will use more advanced features of applications.
During this cycle, the teacher can choose from a number of themes depending on the abilities and interests of the students and the school’s IT infrastructure. So there are many ways to make this class rewarding for students.
